Miss Alice Mckinney
Ms. Alice McKinney is a native Houstonian which is rare for most who call their home Houston. She graduated from Douglass Elementary school and Jack Yates Sr. High. She completed her formal education at Prairie Prairie A& M college as it was known then, but since has adopted to Prairie View University, majoring in Clothing /Textiles in The School of Home Economics from which she graduated in May 1967. Ms. McKinney was very active while attending the University, and involved in Academic and social clubs.
After graduation, she returned to Houston, where her career began with employment at Montgomery Ward in Palms Center as an interior design consultant. From there she went into an intern program as an assistant buyer under Mr. Jack Gabel. I also worked at Joske's (formally known as Dillards as an Assistant Buyer in the Art needlework and fabric department under the direction of Mr. Jack Gabel.
Full of ideas and the need to burn that entrepreneurial energy, Ms. McKinney opened her dream project, a sewing studio on Feb. 29, 1986, in Cloth World Fabrics on Stella Link, and later several studios throughout Houston. Finally, the Sewing Connection was located in a permanent location until May 1999.
An opportunity was soon in the wind again for Alice, because she was offered a position at Bellaire Sr. High as a Marketing Coordinator in 1973, where she worked with Marketing students in various programs, etc. until retirement in May 2018 to devote all of her time to the Just In Time Non-Profit Foundation.
